An intergovernmental organisation founded by the Treaty of London on 5 May 1949, the Council of Europe brings together 47 countries with a combined population of some 820 million. The Council of Europe’s activities have led to the creation of many standards, charters and agreements aimed at facilitating cooperation between member states and strengthening European integration. The Council of Europe works mainly to safeguard Human Rights and promote democratic values.
