An emblematic Mediterranean species, the bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus has been fished for over 7,000 years. It has come to symbolise the fragility of marine resources, threatened by uncurbed, unsustainable human activities. Bluefin tuna were heavily overfished in the early 1990s. The introduction of fishing quotas from 2008 has helped to reverse the decline. However, the increase in permitted catches for the period 2018-2020 raises the risk of overfishing once more.
