Born in 1877, Kees Van Dongen was a Dutch painter who acquired French nationality. He was an avant-garde artist and a proponent of Fauvism. He lived in Monaco from 1949 until the time of his death in 1968. His masterpieces were acquired by the Principality of Monaco between 2004 and 2008, from his family. This stamp represents The Night (La Nuit), a work of 1922 which has belonged to the Prince's Palace in Monaco since 2007.
