The block refers to « The philately of Americas », the theme of the exhibition MonacoPhil 2017. North America is represented by the unforgettable Grace Kelly (1929-1982), Hollywood star who became Princess of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III in 1956. The Monegasque-Brazilian inventor and artist Hercule Florence (1804-1879) features South America. Brought up in Monaco, the young Florence emigrated to Brazil in 1824 and found himself taking part as a draughtsman in the Langsdorff expedition to the Mato Grosso. The inventor of Zoophonia and of Polygraphia, in 1833 Hercule Florence invented in Brazil a photographic process and was the first to use the word “Photographie”.
